Why Save the Mountain?

The Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park is a huge development proposed to be located on Belleayre Mountain at the intersection of Routes 28 and 49A in Highmount, NY, with buildings and roads continuing up the steep slopes to over 3000′ in elevation. The location is within in the Catskill Park, in the NYC Watershed and borders constitutionally protected, forever wild forest preserve lands rich in wildlife, on the West side of the taxpayer owned, DEC managed Belleayre Ski Center.

“There were snickers and snide comments five years ago when Dean L. Gitter built Catskill Corners, a gaudy gift-shop mall featuring the world’s largest kaleidoscope and a silo painted with psychedelic designs. Even Mr. Gitter, an actor-turned-developer who wears a cowboy hat and ponytail, seemed happy to poke fun at his hucksterish image, promoting himself as ”the P.T. Barnum of the Catskills.” But few people here, Mr. Gitter included, are laughing about his latest proposal, for a $300 million resort atop a mountain in the heart of the Catskill Park.”
